Translate the museum’s unique experience and mood into a compelling website while maintaining the institution’s obscure nature by providing only enough information to instill curiosity.
Looking at the original site, I turned my focus towards navigation, hierarchy, visuals and mood.
In order to capture the museum's mysterious nature, I researched the types of people that the institution attracted so that I could better understand the persona it could project.
On the border of West Los Angeles, surrounded by trendy areas like Hollywood, Culver City, and Venice Beach.

“It's like stepping into a portal to a bizarre new dimension...a completely unique, surreal, and subtly wry experience.”
Things fall together upon closer inspection to detail, and yet still leave a feeling of mystery.

My concept revolved around simulating the walk through experience of the actual museum. Based on my past visits, I wanted to translate the exploration through the darkness unveiling the lit displays of exhibits.
To execute this experience, I focused on photo manipulation and hover states, which is how I translated real world actions of viewers in a museum; walking through, seeing exhibits, and lingering to take a closer look.
With a darkened palette, and placing information in an order that brings forth the distinguishing features, while still portraying the exhibits as the main focus, the website has an air of mystery.
Having chosen an institute with a very specific persona, it was a challenge designing a solution that updated the site's usability while maintaining its obscure nature. By being conscious of these factors, I learned to pay more attention to how the placement of features affects the goal of the website.
